Presidential hopeful Mohamed ElBaradei called on youth Thursday to closely monitor the upcoming parliamentary elections to ensure that no electoral fraud or other forms of abuse take place.
In a video posted on his official Facebook page, ElBaradei said that Egyptians must turn out in massive numbers for the elections, which are slated to begin on 28 November.
"I know these are not the best circumstances to hold elections … there are problems in the law and the [carving out] of electoral districts, but we must not forget that these are our first free elections in 60 years," ElBaradei said, directing his words at Egypt's youth.
He encouraged young people to help the elderly and disabled while casting their votes.
“Be an example like the young people who made this revolution,” ElBaradei went on. “If we succeed in restoring the spirit of the revolution during the elections, we will move forward, and nothing will stand in front of us, not even the government or the military."
ElBaradei stressed that if young people widely participate in the electoral process, it will give them “experience for the next parliament.”
"Despite the fact that this is not the parliament we hoped to form following the revolution in terms of the representation of the youth and groups that actively participated in the revolution, it is the first time that we are participating in a democratic process in 60 years," Baradei said.
