Military council proposes changes to presidential elections law

The ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) has submitted a draft law to amend legislation on presidential elections.

The Advisory Council, headed by former Information Minister Mansour Hassan, is to review the draft during sessions starting on Saturday.

The draft law would amend 15 articles from the 2005 presidential elections law by requiring presidential candidates to gain the support of 30 members of parliament or 30,000 eligible voters from 15 different governorates.

It also proposes allowing any political party with at least one parliamentary seat field at least one member for the presidency.

According to the draft, presidential candidates must have high school diplomas.
