Dozens of young political activists were chased by security forces through the streets of the capital on Thursday while attempting to hang posters depicting Gamal Mubarak–son of President Hosni Mubarak and possible candidate in next year's presidential elections–under whose picture was written “Egypt's too big for you.”
The posters were quickly torn down by police.
The activists were supporters of Ayman Nour, founder of the opposition Ghad Party, who called for the move in response to a campaign being waged by Gamal Mubarak supporters. The latter in recent days have hung posters around Cairo calling for a presidential run by the younger Mubarak.
“The security services must deal with us in the same way they deal with Gamal Mubarak supporters,” said Nour’s campaign coordinator, Karin al-Shaer. “Why didn’t they tear down the pro-Gamal Mubarak posters?”
“We will continue to hang these posters around Cairo,” said Nour, accusing the regime of grooming Gamal for the presidency. “And I also plan to place posters of myself as a presidential candidate.”
