The Zamalek club, one of the largest football clubs in Egypt, suggested that team practices resume. The practices have been stalled since last week when violence after a Port Said football match left at least 74 dead.
The club also suggested a match with Ahly club, its longtime rival, with revenue from the match to be allocated to martyrs’ families. Ahly agreed to the idea.
At least 74 people were killed in Port Said on Wednesday when supporters of the local Masry team stormed the pitch to attack fans of the visiting Ahly team.
In wake of the incident, several sporting clubs froze their activities indefinitely, Egyptian authorities froze plans for the Premier League, and Egyptian Football Association’s board resigned.
Egypt’s Parliament held Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim responsible for the incident, which sparked public anger against the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces and Prime Minister Kamal al-Ganzouri’s transitional government. Thousands held demonstrations, in which at least eight people were killed, near the Interior Ministry in central Cairo.
