Jama'a al-Islamiya leader Assem Abdel Maged has announced his intention to launch a campaign seeking to gather 40 million signatures in support of toppled president Mohamed Morsy's reinstatement, days after the Armed Forces removed him from office following mass demonstrations calling for early elections.
He made the declaration Monday night on a stage at Rabaa al-Daweya Square, where Islamist supporters of Morsy have been demonstrating in rejection of what they describe as a military coup.
Tamarod, a youth opposition campaign, announced in April that it would collect millions of signature demanding early presidential elections. Its push for protests on 30 June drew a mass turnout that prompted the army to depose Morsy.
The campaign was opposed by Abdel Maged's Tagarrud (neutrality), which sought to defend Morsy's legitimacy as Egypt's first elected president.
The South Giza Prosecution on Sunday summoned Abdel Maged for questioning regarding his role in violence between Morsy supporters and opponents near Cairo University last week, which left at least 32 dead.
