Tanta Misdemeanor Court has sentenced opposition activist Ahmed Douma to 6 months in prison on charges of insulting President Mohamed Morsy. Bail was set at LE 5,000.
Dozens of supporters gathered before the court to express solidarity with Douma. They chanted slogans against the president and the Muslim Brotherhood from which Morsy originated.
Douma arrived at the court on Monday morning. Dozens of political activists and members of the April 6 movement gathered in front of the court ahead of the verdict. They raised banners with the movement’s slogan.
High security was imposed fearing riots.
Morsy, elected in June last year, has been accused of suppressing or seeking to suppress opponents and journalists who criticise him by accusing them of defamation..
