Egyptian activists recently launched a Facebook campaign to gather one million signatures aimed at dissolving the National Democratic Party (NDP), the political body formerly headed by deposed President Hosni Mubarak.
Members of the page now number near 20,000. Activists have created several other similar groups urging the dismantling of the erstwhile ruling party and the prosecution of Mubarak.
"I hope this notorious, failed party will be dissolved as soon as possible,” a Facebook member commented.
“The country should see fresh ideas other than those of the NDP," said another.
Lawyer Ibrahim Bassiouni last week announced he will file a suit to call for the negation of the NDP's permit, the banning of its activities and the closing of all its branches throughout Egypt.
Bassiouni further called for returning all of the party's properties to the state as well as freezing its assets in Egyptian banks and distributing them among the population.
The NDP has spread corruption and fraud, Bassiouni alleged, and has devastated Egyptian social and political life. The party's exploitative and negligent behavior, according to Bassiouni, paved the road to the 25 January revolution.
