Political activists, bloggers and rights activists announced the establishment of national bodies of journalists, media professionals, activists and lawyers to generate a list of the martyrs of the 25 January revolution and their families' addresses. The objective is to provide legal protection for the families, who claim to have been threatened by police to drop legal action against officers accused of killing their relatives.
These bodies, which will exist in all governorates, will expose any such threats in the media and help the families of martyrs receive the compensation granted to them by the government.
In a statement, the members of this popular initiative said two days ago that the martyrs' names will be announced to the public to help provide support to their families. Mohamed Marie, who came up with the idea, told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the initiative was welcomed in political and human rights circles. Activist Wael Ghonim has joined the effort, saying he has the addresses and names of several of the martyrs.
The Hisham Mubarak Law Center, members form the April 6 Youth Movement and other revolutionary and liberal powers have joined too, he said, adding that young Muslim Brotherhood members and Salafis will also be encouraged to join.
He said the body will be apolitical, to prevent any attempts to exploit the families for political gain.
