African Union’s Wise Men Committee, which visits Egypt currently, has requested meeting the Muslim Brotherhood-led National Alliance to Support Legitimacy on Wednesday.
Omar Azzam, leader with the Arab Consolidation Party, said the delegation called for meeting with the alliance on Wednesday during communications on Monday with the Muslim Brotherhood figure Mohamed Ali Beshr, former local development minister.
“Beshr got back to the alliance and it was agreed to hold the meeting, which most probably will take place at the hotel where the delegation resides. We were not informed about specific agenda in advance. We will declare everything after the meeting clearly,” he added.
The delegation met with the alliance twice before, according to Azzam. The first was during Rabaa al-Adaweya sit-in in August, when it visited the sit-in and met with the alliance leaders. The second was in September.
The delegation also met earlier with Nabil Fahmy, foreign minister, when it expressed confidence that what happened in Egypt was not ‘military coup but people’s uprising,’ according to what was announced by then by Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Badr Abdel Aaty.
The African Union had suspended Egypt’s membership after the ouster of toppled President Mohamed Morsy by armed forces in July 2013 supported by mass protests against his rule. The procedure is usually taken by the union in cases of constitutional changes in regimes.
