A medical team at the Sayed Galal University Hospital in Bab al-Shaaria, affiliated with Al-Azhar University, succeeded in reattaching a young man’s amputated hand after a grueling operation that took approximately 12 hours.
Doctors who overcame the ‘impossible’
In praise of the achievement, one doctor posted on his Facebook page, “Long live the distinguished Al-Azhar University and the pioneering Al-Azhar Faculty of Medicine. Long live Egypt’s doctors. The miracle happened in the operating room, and the hand returned, thank God, after a surgery that lasted nearly 12 continuous hours.”
The doctor continued, “A young man was involved in a horrific accident. His hand was completely severed from the wrist! In an instant, his dream was shattered, his hope was lost, and the world went dark. But thank God, in the Plastic Surgery Department at Al-Azhar Faculty of Medicine, they don’t know the word ‘impossible.'”
“The plastic surgery deputies at Al-Azhar were in a race against time. The case was admitted and entered to emergency surgery in less than half an hour, and a very delicate operation was performed. They connected arteries, veins, nerves, tendons, and muscles. Everything was connected perfectly, as if the hand had never been severed.”
He said, “Thanks to God, and through the hands of dedicated doctors, and under the guidance of great professors, they brought life back to a hand that had been destroyed. They brought back feeling, movement, and hope.”
“This is not a fictional story. It is a true story from the heart of Sayed Galal University Hospital at Al-Azhar Faculty of Medicine. It will remain a landmark among many in the history of the department, and proof of what Egyptian doctors at Al-Azhar Faculty of Medicine have been able to achieve, God willing.”
The Dean of the Faculty of Medicine for Boys at Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Hussein Aboul-Gheit, also hailed the achievement, which has raised the bar for the Faculty of Medicine for Boys at Al-Azhar University in Cairo.
The medical efforts made by Al-Azhar University doctors to serve patients in Al-Azhar University hospitals and abroad showcase their duty to their country, he said.
Aboul-Gheit noted that this comes of the Sayed Galal University Hospital’s journey to provide the highest level of medical services free of charge to patients and the neediest groups from various governorates of Egypt.
