Agriculture Ministry aims for 60% self-sufficiency by next wheat harvest

The Ministry of Agriculture has announced it is in the process of expanding Egypt's total wheat cultivation to include some 3.25 million acres of land in order to attain a national self-sufficiency rate of 60 percent by the next harvest season.

The ministry also plans to reduce seed prices so as to encourage farmers to plant additional wheat crops.

According to Mahmoud Meselhi, head of the ministry’s seeds department, seeds available for purchase will be of the highest quality.

“We'll make sure farmers use our seeds rather than other, lower-quality products,” he said.
