Ain Sokhna electricity plant has closed as workers step up demands for new employment contracts for the second consecutive day.
Workers continued to urge the Ministry of Electricity and Energy on Sunday to hurry up procedures for granting continued work contracts.
Protesting workers claimed that negotiations were not being taken seriously, adding that they had already halted work at the plant in Suez governorate on 3 June. No conclusion had been reached yet, state media reported.
Several officials from the ministry have promised to resolve the situations. Workers claim nothing has changed.
Workers' representative Ayman Saeed said plant staff reject delays in contracting workers. Designation procedures are ongoing but moving ahead very slowly, he added, explaining the logic behind the protests and work stoppages.
Electricity cuts have increased in Egypt in recent months after the cash-strapped country failed to import sufficient fuel supplies.
In March, the Ministry of Petroleum blamed power cuts on the state-run electricity industry's inability to secure the necessary funds to import fuel.
Suez's Ain Sokhna plant has been home to a series of industrial actions since the Egyptian revolution in 2011.
