Air Cairo will operate regular weekly flights from Billund, Denmark, to Sharm El-Sheikh Airport, and from Milan, Italy, to Sharm El-Sheikh and Marsa Alam, starting in November, said Yasser al-Ramly, chairman of the airline.
Ramly said that Air Cairo transported 250,000 tourists from January to September 2017 on approximately 2,000 flights to Sharm El-Sheikh, Hurghada and Marsa Alam.
This comes under the Ministry of Civil Aviation’s strategy to revitalize the tourist industry in Egypt, and Air Cairo ‘s strategy to expand the company’s network in Europe, according to Ramly.
Egypt has been battling to recover the struggling tourism sector over the course of 2016, after years of political turmoil following the January 25 uprising in 2011. This was exacerbated by the crash of a Russian plane in October 2015, which killed all 224 passengers and crew on board, most of them Russian tourists.
Air Cairo announced in October 2016 the start of new flights between European countries and Sharm el-Sheikh, including Austria and Norway.
