Al-Azhar Grand Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayyeb will deliver a statement from Tahrir Square on 25 January, the anniversary of the outbreak of the revolution, to demand the rapid transfer of power to civilians, state media outlets reported on Wednesday.
According to the state TV website, Tayyeb's statement will also demand speedy trials for all those involved in killing protestors during the revolution. It also said the statement will emphasize that Egypt is a civil state and should remain so and will demand equality, freedom of opinion and the independence of the judiciary.
The website said that these demands were agreed upon during a meeting on Wednesday between Tayyeb and representatives of various revolutionary youth movements and political parties.
Attendees demanded that Al-Azhar be involved in drafting the new constitution, state-run Middle East News Agency (MENA) said.
It added that attendees agreed to have an operations room inside Al-Azhar on 25 January, to act as a link between the young people and movements in Tahrir Square and Al-Azhar. This is indended to help preserve the peaceful nature of the protests.
Kefaya leader Mohamed Abdel Aziz said, in statements cited by MENA, that everyone agrees not to sabotage the revolution.
He also denounced accusations of thuggery aimed at the revolutionaries and demanded the speedy transfer of power to a civilian government and the achievement of the goals of the revolution.
