Al-Azhar staff and students to resume leadership protests after Eid

Students and staff members at Al-Azhar University have announced that they will resume their demonstrations to demand the removal of academic leaders linked to the former Mubarak regime after the Eid al-Adha vacation ends.

The protests had gone on for two weeks prior to Eid, which began on Sunday.

Students told Al-Masry Al-Youm that they are demanding university elections include the post of university president, not only faculty and department heads.

Al-Azhar University President Osama al-Abd has excluded his post from university elections and ensured that voting for department and faculty heads will be conducted transparently.

Students and faculty members staged protests at various Egyptian universities in March demanding that all university presidents loyal to ousted President Hosni Mubarak be sacked.

Elections for deans and university electoral college members took place at a number of Egyptian universities, including Cairo University, in September.
