Amnesty uses Egyptian queen to protest Morsy Berlin visit

Global human rights organization Amnesty International organized a protest in Berlin on Wednesday to coincide with President Mohamed Morsy's visit to Germany, according to German news agency DPA.

The group condemned what they called excessive force used by Egyptian security forces against protesters. At least 53 have died in violence across several governorates following a restive second anniversary of the 25 January revolution.

Protesters got creative in their message by building two busts of pharaonic Queen Nefertiti: one with the queen wearing a blood-stained eye patch and another of her donning a gas mask. The group also had banners that read: "Morsy: Stop the violence against protesters!"

The rights group called on Morsy to investigate who is responsible for the violence and to put the perpetrators on trial.

The original statue of Nefertiti is part of the Egypt collection in the Neues Museum on Berlin's Museum Island, which is near the office where German Chancellor Angela Merkel is hosting talks with Morsy.
