Antiquities Ministry tries to stop online auction of Egyptian artifacts

The Antiquities Ministry is trying to stop the sale of allegedly smuggled Egyptian artifacts in an online auction.

Twenty-three items are on sale by the US-based Sotheby's Auctions Hall.

The ministry said that its investigative unit spotted the rare artifacts online and reached out to the foreign ministry and INTERPOL for help in recovering them.

Officials are demanding that Sotheby's provide documents proving that it legally owns the artifacts. If the company fails to do so, the ministry said that it will take all necessary steps in order to recover the missing items.
