The April 6 Youth Movement announced Saturday that the group will be holding its first internal election since its founding in 2008.
Voters in all of Egypt’s governorates will be able to cast their votes for the group’s general coordinator and other leading positions between 1 March and 6 April, spokesperson for the group Mahmoud Afify told government news agency MENA Saturday.
The voting and counting process will take place under the supervision of a large number of judges and rights organizations, Afify said. The election comes after restructuring the movement and amending the group's internal regulation, he added.
He said thousands of members throughout Egypt would be invited to participate in the nomination and the election process in the coming days.
The April 6 Youth Movement was one of the main organizations that called for protests against the Hosni Mubarak regime early last year. A mass protest on 25 January sparked a wave of demonstrations that culminated in Mubarak's resignation on 11 February.
In recent months, April 6 has been highly critical of the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, which assumed power after Mubarak. In July, SCAF accused the group of treason following a planned demonstration in front of the Defense Ministry.
The group’s current general coordinator, Ahmed Maher, was injured earlier this month during clashes in front of the Interior Ministry. A post on the group’s Facebook page said that Maher was not injured in an attack on security forces, but when a piece of a nearby torched building fell on him.
