Arab League officials on Tuesday announced their endorsement of Palesinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ refusal to resume peace negotiations in light of ongoing Israeli settlement construction.
Mohamed Sobeih, Arab League assistant secretary-general, told reporters that continued construction precludes an Arab voice in the talks.
The Arab Peace Initiative Committee will convene on Wednesday at the headquarters of the Arab League Secretariat in Cairo to discuss options for advancing Palestinian statehood, said Sobeih.
Halted construction is not a pre-condition for talks, as Israeli officials have characterized it, Sobeih added, but a road map component that EU and US negotiators have supported for some time now.
