Army destroys 16 militant hideouts in Sinai

The Third Field Army’s law enforcement forces in central Sinai discovered and destroyed an ammunition storehouse, three motorbikes, and 16 hideouts being used by militants for storing logistic and medical supplies, said Armed Forces’ spokesperson Tamer al-Refaei, on Sunday.

He added that the forces also destroyed four acres of narcotic plants in addition to a large quantity of narcotics intended for distribution.

In the framework of tightening control on the crossings leading to central Sinai, a bus was seized with narcotic materials in a tunnel, Refaei said.

He concluded his statement by saying that the armed forces are continuing their efforts to pursue all criminal elements by combing terrorist outposts and conducting raids.

Egypt has been battling an insurgency in the troubled Sinai peninsula since a 2011 uprising ended the rule of long-time autocrat Hosni Mubarak.
