High Representative of the European Union, Catherine Ashton, met on Thursday during a visit to Egypt, a number of Egyptian officials, including interim president Adly Mansour, Secretary General of the Arab League Nabil al-Araby, former Defense Minister and presidential hopeful Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and presidential hopeful Hamdeen Sabbahi.
A EU diplomatic source said Ashton's visit comes to discuss Egyptian-European relations, the developments on the regional and international arenas, to follow up preparations for the upcoming presidential elections and stress the need for transparency, and the impartiality of government institutions toward all candidates so as to ensure the implementation of the road map within the framework of an inclusive democracy.
