Aswan home collapses, killing elderly woman

A 70-year-old woman was killed and her two sons injured when a two-floor structure collapsed on Thursday in Kom Ombo, Aswan.

Ambulances took the survivors to a local hospital as they were pulled out of the rubble.

Investigators said the structure was made of clay bricks and the second story did not have a roof. The walls reportedly collapsed when the roof on the first floor gave way.

The victim was identified as Safia Hassan and her sons as Mohamed, 27, and Ahmed, 47.

The Kom Ombo City Council ordered an engineering committee formed to examine the house and determine the cause of the collapse.

The incident follows a building collapse in Alexandria Wednesday that killed 28 people. Officials said the eight-story apartment building had been built illegally.

Such fatal collapses are not uncommon as residential buildings are often erected without the necessary permits or safety precautions.
