Attorney general appoints team to investigate Imbaba violence

Egyptian Attorney General Abdel Meguid Mahmoud ordered the formation of a team of prosecutors to investigate sectarian clashes that erupted Saturday in Imbaba, a neighborhood in northwest Cairo.

Prosecutors went to hospitals to examine the bodies of those who died during the unrest. They reported that some had been shot in the head or chest, while others died after being hit by stones or beaten with other weapons.

The prosecutors reported that the victims' families had no information about the incidents and had only heard about a fight taking place. The families, they said, did not accuse particular people, only those involved in the fighting in general.

The team said that injured individuals said they were passing by the scene by incidentally.

A judicial source told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the prosecution services had decided to postpone its inspections of the scene – including the torched church, neighboring houses and burned vehicles – as the area is not yet safe enough for the team to investigate.
