Attorney General seeks US info for Mercedes bribery case

Attorney General Abdel Meguid Mahmoud requested “more accurate ” information from US authorities on the involvement of an Egyptian official in a bribery case, where the official is said to have accepted a bribe from Mercedes-Benz to increase the sales of the company in Egypt.

Mahmoud requested that US judicial authorities send him a complete copy of the investigation records since Egypt and the US are both signatories to the UN Convention Against Corruption.

The Attorney General requested those records after reports pointed out the difficulty in revealing the identity of the person who accepted the bribe, security sources said.

The same sources said that some documents which could have aided in the identification of the Egyptian official involved in the bribery have disappeared.

Mahmoud had earlier referred the case to the prosecution upon the request of Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif, after investigations in the US revealed that the company in question paid bribes to a senior Egyptian official.
