AUC provost dies of pancreatic cancer

American University in Cairo Provost Medhat Haroun died Thursday morning after his battle with pancreatic cancer, the university announced.

Haroun was appointed AUC provost in January 2011, succeeding Lisa Anderson as the university’s chief academic officer when she was appointed its president.

"It is with a heavy heart and deep sadness that I write to confirm the news that Provost Medhat Haroun died this morning, after a heroic struggle with pancreatic cancer,” Anderson wrote in an email to the AUC community.

Haroun is a world-renowned expert in earthquake engineering, having conducted considerable research on seismic loading and structures’ response to earthquakes. He was appointed dean of AUC’s School of Sciences and Engineering in 2005, according to the university’s website.

“It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing away of AUC Provost Medhat Haroun,” the AUC newsroom tweeted Thursday.

“Condolences may be extended today during El Dhuhr prayers at 11:40 at Mostafa Mahmoud Mosque,” it said.
