A commission from the Central Auditing Organization (CAO) will visit Hawamdiya today to prepare a comprehensive report on pollution in the Nile and drainage problems in the city.
Last week Al-Masry Al-Youm published an investigative report on pollution in Hawamdiya that found dangerous levels of toxins in the river and found fault with the local sugar company for the pollution.
The commission will meet with officials from 6th of October Governorate and the Ministry of Environment, as well as representatives from the sugar company. It will take water samples and investigate the effects of water contamination on the health of Hawamdiya residents.
CAO head Gawdat el-Malt decided to form the commission last Thursday. It was then that he contacted the governor of 6th of October and the minister of environment, asking them to assist his taskforce. A reliable source at the CAO told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the auditory body had previously released reports about water contamination, but also said this is the first time it has focused on a particular area. Al-Masry Al-Youm’s investigative articles will be among the documents presented by the commission.
The report is expected to be concluded within a month, at which point it will be submitted to the minister of environment and the governor of 6th of October.
The commission is headed by Nadia el-Sha’aar, general manager of planning administration at the services sector, other members include Umaima Refaei, Azza Thabet, and Ashraf Yaqoub Barsom.
The report comes as part of a new series of reports on public issues called "CAO at the Center of Events."
