Minister of Manpower Ahmed Hassan al-Borei on Wednesday said his ministry is considering implementing a special minimum wage for Upper Egypt. Wages in Upper Egypt are relatively low compared to the rest of the country, in particular the Delta region.
Al-Borei said that the policy would only apply to public sector companies. “We cannot oblige the private sector to do the same,” he added.
The minister said the Federation of Trade Unions has failed to rebuke the former ruling regime’s excesses against workers, especially with regard to privatization.
