Best Egyptian films of 2014

The 25 January revolution was reflected in everything, including literature, arts and cinema. Just as there was Egypt before and after 25 January, there was Egyptian cinema before and after 25 January.

The creative output of Egyptian cinema was particularly affected by the revolution — while only 26 new films were shown in 2011, 47 films came out in 2008, the largest number since the beginning of the 21st century.

There were 31 films in 2012, 27 in 2013 and 37 in 2014. It could be argued that the turn of the century is experiencing a renaissance for Egyptian cinema.

Here are the best 10 films of 2014 in my opinion:

– “Al-Khoroug Lel Nahar” (Going Out to Daylight), directed by Hala Lotfy.
– “Decor,” directed by Ahmed Abdallah al-Sayed.
– “Fatat al-Masnaa” (Factory Girl), directed by Mohamed Khan.
– “Jews of Egypt,” directed by Amir Ramses.
– “Halawet Rooh,” directed by Sameh Abdel Aziz.
– “The Blue Elephant,” directed by Marwan Hamed.
– “AI-Jazeera 2,” directed by Sherif Arafa.
– “La Moakhza” (Excuse My French), directed by Amr Salama.
– “Soneiaa fi Masr” (Made in Egypt), directed by Amr Salama.
– “Family Secrets,” directed by Hany Fawzy.
