British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is preparing to unveil his plan for the formal recognition of Palestine as a state, as well as an end to the war in Gaza, according to the British newspaper The Telegraph.
The Prime Minister will provide his most detailed explanation yet this week of what would need to happen for Palestine to receive recognition, as well as discuss Britain’s efforts to improve aid access to Gaza to address the famine.
The Telegraph reported that Starmer is expected to present his proposals to the British public in what insiders predict will be a “public moment,” such as a speech or press conference.
However, recognition of the state is expected to remain conditional on achieving a ceasefire, and possibly Hamas releasing the remaining Israeli hostages, the newspaper added.
Starmer will present the plan to the UK’s allies, including the US and Arab states. According to the report, the plan will include the steps necessary to transform the ceasefire into a sustainable peace.
But this may not meet the demands of a third of Labor MPs and members of Kerr’s government, who have been pushing for immediate recognition of Palestine.
French President Emmanuel Macron was the first G7 leader to announce his intention to take this step last week, with the formal change coming at the UN General Assembly in September.
This followed weeks of private discussions with the UK and other allies about how and when to announce recognition of Palestine.
