Security services at the Abu Simbel Temple, south of Aswan in Upper Egypt, thwarted a British tourist’s attempt to bury his mother’s remains inside the temple on Sunday upon her request.
Security at the temple noticed a suspicious box in the possession of a tourist while organizing the entry of tourists to visit the temple.
Upon examining the box with an X-ray machine, a jar was found inside containing the remains of the tourist’s mother, who had died in England a year ago.
The tourist confirmed that his mother had asked him to bury her remains in Egypt upon her death, so the son traveled to Egypt to fulfill her wish at the Abu Simbel Temple.
Police were notified of the incident and legal measures were taken, and a pledge was taken from the tourist not to repeat the incident again inside Egyptian archaeological sites as it is legally prohibited.
