A group of hackers targeted a Muslim Brotherhood-run Facebook page promoting presidential nominee Khairat al-Shater, said group member Islam Turky, claiming that the cyber attack followed the Brotherhood’s criticism of former intelligence chief Omar Suleiman’s presidential bid.
Islam Turky, who serves on the Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party media committee, said on Tuesday the party had regained control of the page.
Turky said during a phone-in with the privately owned channel ONTV that the organization would take legal action against alleged Suleiman supporters who posted anti-Brotherhood comments on the page.
Some of the comments read, “Suleiman will be president of the Egyptians” and “Rejecting not returning the favor to Suleiman.”
Brotherhood lawyer Abdel Moneim Abdel Maqsoud has also said he would appeal to the Presidential Elections Commission to disqualify Suleiman based on a 2011 court verdict to dissolve the National Democratic Party.
Nermine Mahmoud, coordinator of the popular campaign supporting Suleiman for president, said on Tuesday that, based on his principles, Suleiman would not allow supporters to hack other candidates’ pages.
Mahmoud said the campaign followed the hacking of the Brotherhood page, but does not know who the culprits are.
She also added that Suleiman’s campaign will soon announce an official spokesperson to prevent inconsistency in its statements.
