Brotherhood met with military council before boycotting Friday’s demo

Informed sources claim a delegation of the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) group, headed by Deputy General Guide Khairat al-Shater, met with the military council on Monday, hours before the group announced that it would boycott Friday’s million-man demonstration, billed as “Correcting the Path of the Revolution”.

MB spokesman Mahmoud Ghazlan, however, declined to comment on the news.

The boycott has angered the group’s young members, who called on their leadership “not to abandon the revolution,” according to statements on their Facebook pages.

Meanwhile, Jama'a al-Islamiya spokesman Tarek al-Zomor also denied his group met with the military council. “Our position was clear from the beginning, not to take part in that unjustified demonstration,” he said.

Adel Afifi, president of the Salafi Asala Party, for his part, said the party would not participate in a demonstration that is against the military council, also denying he has met with the council.

Salafi Front spokesman Khaled Saeed said the front would boycott the demonstration because it calls for postponing the parliamentary elections and forming a national council to replace the military one, both of which he considers illegitimate demands.
