The Cairo Criminal Court on Tuesday declined to review the retrial case of steel tycoon Ahmed Ezz, who is charged with money laundering and illegal acquisition of public funds totaling LE6.5 billion.
The case dossier was submitted to the Cairo Appeals Court to determine which court circuit will review the case.
Ezz was close to the Hosni Mubarak regime and held the position of organization secretary in the now-dissolved National Democratic Party.
The Cassation Court ordered the retrial of Ezz after overturning a ruling issued against him in October that had sentenced him to seven years in prison and fined him LE19 billion.
The court head and his assistant declined to review the case because they issued a ruling against Ezz in another related case.
Mostafa Hassan Abdallah, the head of the court, also declined to review cases related to the killing of protesters during the 25 January 2011 revolution and related to financial corruption in which Mubarak and his sons and Interior Minister Habib al-Adly were implicated, saying he had already ruled in the case of the Battle of the Camel.
