Cairo was one of 31 cities chosen for an information and communications technology (ICT) analysis called the Networked Society City Index, organized by Swedish telecommunications company Ericsson.
The report examines ICT-driven benefit creation in the various cities, especially as it relates to the “triple bottom line” of social, economic and environmental development. It places Cairo within the least-developed ICT group, proposing that action should be taken by the city to “invest in their citizens' ability to adopt new technology, and implement policy and development programs to improve inclusion and increase literacy rates.”
The report pointed out that the improvement of the infrastructure of information and communication technology can positively contribute to enhancing the competitiveness of Cairo and its role as a center of development in Egypt.
Head of Ericsson North East Africa Isil Yalcin said Cairo ICT 2013, an ICT-oriented conference taking place from 9-12 December, is a platform for dealing with partners in the ICT industry and for discussing key developments in the sector in Egypt, according to Computer News Middle East. She also noted that the needs of mobile subscribers in Egypt are rapidly growing every day.
