Call for a referendum starts constitution-rigging process: Jama’a al-Islamiya leader

Safwat Abdel Ghany head of the political bureau of Construction and Development Party, the political arm of the Jama’a al-Islamiya, has accused interim President Adly Mansour's call to hold a referendum on the constitution mid-January as being beginning of “a rigging process.”

“The process of rigging the referendum has started, as the coup president called the Egyptian people in his speech to repeat the ‘dazzling’ state, which took place on 30 June,” Abdel Ghany posted on Facebook.

The interim government hopes by passing the new constitution with public support in the referendum, the new government will finish an important step in the roadmap, legitimizing itself and will then move forward with parliamentary and presidential elections.

Along with the majority of the Islamist parties and groups, Jama’a al-Islamiya wishes to reinstate deposed President Mohamed Morsy and the Muslim Brotherhood while rejecting the interim government’s roadmap. Unlike other Islamist groups, the Salafi-oriented Nour Party has sided with the current administration ruling the country and has called for voters to approve the referendum.
