Cancer mortality around the world jumps to 8.2 million

Cancer deaths around the world have jumped to 8.2 million in 2012, with a sharp increase in breast cancer cases in developing countries.

According to the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), following Western lifestyle in developing countries is one reason for the spread of the disease.

The IARC also says that the cancer mortality rate has increased by 8 percent from the 7.6 million rate of 2008, and that 522,000 women died from breast cancer last year, an increase of 14 percent.

Also, 14.1 million people developped cancer in 2012, compared to 12.7 million in 2008, of which 1.7 million women had breast cancer.

The IARC report defines 28 kinds of cancer in 184 countries and provides an overview of all cancer cases worldwide. It says the most common kinds among men and women are the lung, liver and colon cancers.

The report expects 19.3 million cases by 2025, given the increase in the world's population.
