Carcinogenic material sits in Suez for decade

The Egyptian Center for Legal Protection, a local consumer-rights watchdog, officially notified the prosecutor-general in the port city of Suez that ten containers bearing carcinogenic insecticides had been sitting in the port’s warehouses since 1998.

According to center officials, the company that originally imported the containers had failed to re-export them–despite official orders to do so issued almost one decade ago.

The containers represent a hazard to both the local environment and to seaport workers. There are also fears that the insecticides could be stolen and sold on the black market.

The council urged that the containers be disposed of safely.
