Civil servants, workers demonstrate in Cairo

Municipal treasury department employees from the Nile Delta province of Kafr el-Sheikh demonstrated Wednesday in front of the Finance Ministry’s Cairo headquarters to demand financial remuneration at par with their ministry-employed counterparts. Angry protesters called for the implementation of a ministerial decree–No. 423–issued last year to this effect.

Meanwhile, in front of the Agriculture Ministry’s Cairo headquarters, squatters from the Nile Delta district of Al-Manzala protested the government’s refusal to allow them to purchase land on which they have been settled for years–despite earlier promises by the Urban Authority to sell them the land in question.

And in the Helwan province south of Cairo, some 200 workers of the Telephones Equipment Company staged demonstrations to demand three months worth of unpaid salaries. Protesters urged President Hosni Mubarak to intervene personally to resolve the problem. Security forces surrounded the demonstrators, preventing them from blocking the Corniche road as was done ten days ago when they first went on strike.
