Members of two extended families in a village in the Upper Egyptian governorate of Assiut clashed Monday, causing injuries and the burning of 37 homes.
The violence between members of the Hamad and Khadayra families broke out in Arab al-Kalabat village in Assiut.
The two families fought using submachine guns and assault rifles.
The clashes also resulted in the burning of wheat crops in the village. Civil protection forces had to cut off power to control the fire.
Security forces were unable to arrest any of the family members involved in the violence, as they escaped.
Bribes paid at police stations on 28 January last year during the 18-day uprising, as well as the outbreak of the Libyan uprising the same year, has created an unprecedented proliferation of arms in the country, especially in Upper Egypt.
