Clashes renew between Qena tribes

Gun fighting resumed on Tuesday in some areas in Qena following clashes between members of the Ashraf and Homaidat tribes on Sunday.

The clashes were triggered by a fight between taxi drivers.

Heavy fire was exchanged in Ezbet Hamed, a primarily Ashraf area. Relatives of both tribes from neighboring areas joined the fight.

The clashes spread fear among residents, as shop owners closed their stores and families kepy their children home from school.

The clashes left several people injured, seven of whom were taken to the Luxor International Hospital. Each tribe reportedly kidnapped members from the other.

Police arrested 12 suspects in the clashes pending investigations on charges of attempted murder, resistance to the authorities and vandalism.
