The Egyptian Coastguard has arrested 45 young men from various provinces who attempted to travel to Italy by sea without the appropriate legal documentation.
The would-be emigrants were reportedly stopped off the coast of Egypt’s Daqahliya province.
Security services say they received information that smugglers, working outside the law, had planned to take the young men to Italy in return for large sums of money.
Police are currently questioning the passengers in hopes of identifying the smugglers.
