Egyptian Attorney General Abdel Meguid Mahmoud has formed a committee to investigate the regulations in place for the settlement of Egypt's foreign debt, with a view to establishing whether public funds have been wasted or misappropriated, in particular by the former president's two sons, Alaa and Gamal Mubarak.
The committee will be composed of representatives of the Ministry of Trade and Industry, the Ministry of Finance and experts from the Central Bank.
Mahmoud’s spokesman said on the attorney general's Facebook page that the committee has asked the General Authority for Investment and Commercial Registration to provide a briefing on any partnerships held by the two Mubaraks in companies and international agencies operating in Egypt.
The formation of the committee comes against the backdrop of investigations into the illegal accumulation of wealth by Alaa and Gamal Mubarak. The two men are currently being detained at Tora prison in Cairo.
