The Confederation of African Football (CAF) delayed its Total Africa Cup of Nations tournament from January 2021 to January 2022 due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak that has paralyzed the global sports industry.
The decision came during a CAF Executive Committee meeting on Tuesday to discuss the future of competitions and other related issues following the COVID-19 pandemic.
“After consultation with stakeholders and taking into consideration the current global situation, the tournament has been rescheduled for January 2022. The date for the final tournament and the remaining matches of the qualifiers will be communicated in due course,” CAF said in a statement.
On the 2019/20 season, the statement said that the Total CAF Champions League and Total CAF Confederation Cup will resume in September with a final four format, and semi-final matches will be played in a single match.
Egypt’s two major football clubs, Zamalek and Al-Ahly, will clash with the Moroccan champions Raja Club Athletic and Wydad AC in the CAF Champions League semi-finals.
The statement also said that it is decided that Morocco will host the Final Four of Total CAF Confederation Cup.
The Egyptian Pyramids club, meanwhile, will face Guinea’s Horoya AC in the semi-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup.
The meeting of the CAF Executive Committee meeting on Tuesday also confirmed of the appointment of Ali Aissaoui as Commercial Director. Prior to joining CAF, Aissaoui served as Business Development Manager of FC Barcelona.
