Coptic activists call for resolving Wadi al-Rayan monastery crisis

A number of Coptic activists have called on the Egyptian government to swiftly resolve the Wadi al-Rayan monastery crisis.

"This crisis is no longer merely a conflict or a dispute regarding road or land ownership between the clergy, the state and the Church. It has become a bomb threatening to explode in the face of all parties," Coptic thinker Kamal Zakher said.

Maspero Union coordinator Andrawas Oweida called on President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to form a non-governmental fact-finding committee, similar to the one formed by the parliament in 1972 to address the Khanka crisis.

Coptic activist Hany Ramsis has requested Prime Minister Ibrahim Mehleb to return to scientific and professional studies in order to protect Egyptian antiquities, asking the media to stop tackling the crisis in a biased manner.
