Same-sex marriage is a “deviation from normality”, the head of the Egyptian Church said on Monday as defenders of the practice push for its legalization across the globe.
Pope Tawadros II, head of the Coptic Orthodox Church, warned that same-sex marriage, which was ruled by US courts as a human right last month, is a sign of the degradation of society.
“Humans have gone through several stages of development ranging from ethics, religion, innovation, moodiness and rebellion which are an entry to atheism and all forms of extremism and aberration. All that produced what is known in the media as same-sex marriage,” he said during a sermon to young church attendants in Alexandria.
There are no laws specifically criminalizing homosexuality in Egypt, but those involved in the practice are arrested over charges related to debauchery.
Homosexuality in criminalized in at least 76 world countries, with some penalizing the practice with death.
