Scores of Coptic Christians on Monday staged their third demonstration before St. Mark's cathedral in Abbasseya, demanding permission for divorce and civil marriages.
Andre Zaki, vice president of the Anglican Church, meanwhile, called for amendments to the new personal status law to allow for divorce and civil marriages for Christians, in accordance with the free spirit of the 25 January revolution.
Naguib Gabriel, head of the Egyptian Union for Human Rights, requested the justice minister to register civil marriages of Coptic Christians without the prior consent of the church.
A source at the Coptic Church, however, rejected protesters' demands and said the church would never violate the bible’s teachings under any circumstances.
