Copts denounce Islamists for pushing ‘religious revolution’

Coptic activists and organizations say that they refuse to transform the Egyptian revolution into a religious one, criticizing the Islamists that dominated Tahrir Square on Friday.

Speaking to Al-Masry Al-Youm on Saturday, the activists voiced their intentions to fight for a civil state that guarantees freedom, equality and social justice.

The Maspiro Youth Union, in a statement, criticized the Islamists' taking over of the square, which didn’t accord to the agreement made between various political factions before the protest to emphasize common demands.

The group also warned against mixing religion with public policy.

Naguib Gebraeel, head of the Egyptian Union of Human Rights, in a statement on Saturday denounced the inflammatory Islamist slogans, adding that the religious chants did not conform to the revolution’s demands and "transformed it into a religious revolution.”

The Copts Without Restrictions movement expressed readiness to organize its own mass rally to defend a civil state, claiming it was following its people's interests when it withdrew from the rally on Friday.
