Court acquits defendant in prison break case, calls for further investigation

The Ismailia Misdemeanor Appeals Court acquitted on Sunday al-Sayed Attia, the main defendant in the case of the escape of 234 prisoners from the Wadi al-Natrun Prison during the 25 January revolution.

President Mohamed Morsy and other Muslim Brotherhood leaders were among those who escaped.

The court referred the dossier to the public prosecutor to spearhead an investigation into those responsible for storming the prison and releasing the prisoners.

The court also decided to request that Interpol help capture Hezbollah leader Samy Shehab, Hamas leaders Mohamed Hady and Ayman Nofal, and an Al-Qaeda leader in Sinai named Ramzy Mowafy, all of whom escaped from prison during the 25 January uprising.

Members of Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Brotherhood used heavy weapons to release dozens of people who were detained in the Wadi al-Natrun prison, said Judge Khaled Mahgoub.

“Those who claim to be Muslims have killed and shed blood in order to take over power in the country,” the prosecutor argued. “It was proven to the Court that the one heard making the calls in the prison yard is now sitting on the throne.”
