The Manshiyet Nasser Misdemeanor Court today acquitted the deputy governor of Cairo, Mahmoud Yassin al-Sayyed, on charges of negligent homicide of 119 people and injuring 55 others–all victims of a rockslide in Duweiqa, east of Cairo.
The court also exonerated the district’s property management official and re-sentenced six others to one year in prison.
On 26 May, the court handed al-Sayyed a five-year suspended sentence for involuntary manslaughter and injury, while delivering another suspended sentence of three years for the rest of defendants, with LE3000 bail.
In November 2008, boulders from the Muqattam mountain crashed down on the citizens of Ezbet Bekheit, Manshiyet Nasser. Officials were accused of failing to evacuate the area’s dwellers and ignoring technical reports warning the catastrophe may happen.
