The Cairo Court of Appeals set Monday as the date to consider a grievance former President Hosni Mubarak submitted, in which he requested his release pending retrial.
Mubarak’s lawyer, Farid al-Deeb, said in the petition that Mubarak has been in detention pending investigation into the cases related to the killing of demonstrators and financial corruption charges since 12 April 2011, which means he should be released, as Egyptian law limits the time defendants can be detained while awaiting trial to two years.
Mubarak and his former interior minister, Habib al-Adly, received 25-year prison sentences — the maximum possible — during a first trial in June. The court acquitted six security officials who faced charges of involvement in killing protesters, sparking outraged protests across the country.
In January, Egypt’s highest court, the Court of Cassation, ordered a retrial for Mubarak after accepting an appeal against his prison sentence, citing procedural failings.
